Is traditional medicine not working for your autistic child? The truth is, CBD oil can be used to treat the same symptoms without as many nasty side effects.
Many traditional medications could leave your child overly drowsy making it hard for them to perform regular activities. Also, you’ll need three or four separate medicines to treat different symptoms, but CBD oil is an all in one fix so you won’t have to carry a pharmacy in your pocketbook when you go out.
In this article, we’re going to go over all the benefits of CBD oil for autism, and the reasons why it may be a good alternative.
Autism disorder is a complicated set of other disorders that hinder the normal development of the brain. It affects each person differently. Some suffer through very minor issues like a few social problems, to more major ones like language development.
Still, every patient shows some of the same issues such as not being able to look people in the eye and problems with focusing. For a long time the cause was uncertain, but now researchers are saying that it’s a mixture of environmental and genetic factors.
Now that you’re more aware of what autism is, here are ways that CBD oil can fight it’s most common symptoms.
Some children with autism find it hard to focus on normal activities. They can’t sit still for very long and are constantly moving around. Due to the fact that it’s hard for them to focus, most of these children tend to fall behind in school.
It’s believed that CBD’s calming effects can help them slow down a little and focus without making them overly drowsy. This will allow them to sit still and get through their lessons at school.
Autism can cause depression and anxiety in teens and young and adults. Some of the medications that are given to them to fight their autism symptoms can actually make these side effects worse.
CBD reacts to the natural endocannabinoids in the human body causing it affects brain function and reduce the effects of depression and anxiety.
Sometimes children with autism have trouble getting to sleep. CBD oil’s calming effects don’t just end with anxiety, it can also help them sleep in the same way.
It works with their natural endocannabinoids to alter the brain and calm any racing thoughts that are preventing sleep.
One of the most frightening and most common effects of autism is seizures and epilepsy. Most CBD oils act as an anticonvulsant so they can actually stop the seizures from happening.
Seizures happen when certain neurotransmitters send off messages. Anticonvulsants like CBD can attach themselves to them and change the message that they are sending out. Parents have found that when they use the oil on their child it stops a seizure in mear moments.
Most children who have autism have trouble socializing. They can’t look someone in the eye while they talk, and have trouble speaking to others in general. This could be a form of social anxiety.
CBD oil can help them remain calm in these social situations and while they still might not be able to pick up on certain social cues and they still may not like speaking, they can at least communicate without feeling any anxiety towards it.
Children with autism go through severe mood swings. One moment they could be laughing, and in the next, they are on the ground throwing a temper tantrum. There is no telling when the switch could happen, or what triggers it but it’s something that is very common.
CBD oil can stop these mood shifts from happening at school or in public. You shouldn’t rely on it to completely stop the mood changes, but it can keep them calm enough to get through behavioral therapy sessions.
Autistic children can have OCD symptoms that can be harmless and also ones that can be more dangerous. One of the harmless ones would be the fact that they tend to pick one part of a toy to enjoy rather than the whole thing. So, if the toy has a spinning wheel they may focus on that part.
Some of the more harmful ones are not being able to adapt to a major change in their life, or in their schedule. They may also eat nonfood items. For example, they will only eat white foods, this wouldn’t end at edible items. They could take to eating sand.
CBD oil can help them focus on more than one part of a toy and calm them so they don’t have a bad reaction when you stop them from eating sand or have to change their lunch time.
There are medicines that you can give the child if you don’t like the idea of giving them CBD. The problem is, these medications could have a really bad effect on the child. We’re going to go over some of the medications that treat autism and their possible side effects.
Risperidone also goes by the generic name, Risperdal and is used to treat common symptoms of autism, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. The drug’s main purpose it to calm the irritability and mania that comes with these disorders.
The drug does its job but it doesn’t come without its long list of harmful side effects. These include jerky movements, dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, fever, weight gain, headache, increased appetite, restlessness, anxiety, sleep issues, stomach pain, vomiting, and skin rash.
Sertraline is a drug used to treat anxiety and depression. You’ve probably more often have heard it called Zoloft. This drug is used to calm depression that sometimes comes to children with autism, but also keep them calm, help them sleep, etc.
The problem is that while it can help with sleep, it can also help too well causing the child to almost always be sleeping. That isn’t the end of the side effects either. It can also cause nervousness, insomnia, nausea, skin rash, headache, diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach, dry mouth, changes in appetite, and weight loss.
Ritalin is used to treat ADHD symptoms as well as narcolepsy. It may be prescribed to an autistic child to help them keep focus at school. Like Sertraline, it can be a little too good at its job and actually cause insomnia.
More than insomnia it can also cause skin rash, agitation, anxiety, stomach pain, loss of weight, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, palpitations, vision problems, increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, numbness, psychosis, tingling, feeling cold in your hands and feet, and headache.
Clonazepam is used to treat seizures and common anxiety symptoms that come with autism. Even though it treats anxiety symptoms it can increase any signs of depression.
Other side effects surrounding Clonazepam are drowsiness, dizziness, weakness, loss of orientation, sleep disturbances, slurred speech, dry mouth, sore gums, loss of appetite, diarrhea, runny nose, constipation, and blurred vision.
Now that you know some of the common side effects that come with common drugs used to treat autism, here are some of the side effects associated with CBD oil. These include changes in appetite, changes in mood, diarrhea, dry mouth, nausea, drowsiness, and some anxiety.
As you can see, CBD oil also comes with its share of effects, but the list isn’t nearly as long. Also, not too much research has been done on the health benefits of CBD oil. However, extensive research has been done on its effectiveness on fighting seizures.
With a lot of medications that are used to treat autism symptoms come weight gain and increased appetite. CBD oil can actually be used to decrease appetite and help with weight loss.
There is the old stereotype of marijuana giving you the munchies and causing you to eat everything in sight but that’s only with some strains. Some actually have the opposite effect. Not only do some of them decrease appetite, but they can also increase metabolism.
Using CBD oil for autism can be an effective way to fight some of its common symptoms without any of the awful side effects that come with some of the usual medications to treat it. CBD oil can be used to treat depression, insomnia, anxiety, mood swings, and some social issues. While CBD does have its share of effects, none of them are too bad.
